From Stuck To Successful: 3 Lessons For Breaking Into The Gaming Industry
Dec 11, 2024Seven years ago, I found myself in a situation that many professionals can relate to - feeling stuck in a career that didn't align with my passions. I was working in advertising, miles away from anything related to the gaming industry. Fast forward to today, and I'm proud to call myself a veteran of the gaming industry, having launched some of the largest esports scenes in the world.
This transformation didn't happen overnight, nor was it a stroke of luck. It was the result of applying key lessons that I've learned along the way. If you're feeling stuck in your career, especially if you're aspiring to break into the gaming industry, here are the three most important lessons I can share:
1. Don't assume that you can't
When I first considered applying to Riot Games, I looked at my background and couldn't see why anyone would hire me. My experience in advertising seemed worlds apart from the gaming industry. However, instead of giving up, I took a different approach. I figured out what was missing from my skill set and went out to acquire those lessons and experiences to qualify for the job.
This process of self-assessment and targeted skill acquisition is crucial for anyone looking to make a significant career pivot. In my case, it meant immersing myself in the gaming world, learning about esports, and finding ways to apply my advertising expertise to gaming contexts.
Action steps:
- Identify the key skills and experiences required for your dream role in gaming
- Look for opportunities to acquire these skills, whether through side projects, online courses, or volunteer work
- Network with professionals in the gaming industry to gain insights and potential opportunities
2. Don't assume that you can
While it might seem contradictory to the first point, this lesson is about being prepared for setbacks and challenges. Having a backup plan in place, especially in the face of catastrophes, is crucial. When you prepare for the downside, you'll develop abilities and skills that you never knew were possible.
The gaming industry, like many others, can be unpredictable. During my time at Riot Games, I faced numerous challenges, from organizing large-scale events to navigating the complexities of different gaming markets in Southeast Asia. Each challenge pushed me to develop new skills and contingency plans.
Action steps:
- Develop multiple career paths or project ideas within the gaming industry
- Build a diverse skill set that can be applied to various roles in gaming
- Stay informed about industry trends and be ready to pivot when necessary
3. "No's" are just "not yet's"
I maintain a list of audacious projects that I can't pull off... yet. Every year or so, I dust it off and make phone calls to see if they are possible yet. Through this process, I erase some, modify others, and even add new ones. In a good year, I'll be able to take one of these crazy ideas and try to make them happen.
This approach has led to some of my most significant achievements in the gaming industry. For instance, the idea of building Vietnam's first esports stadium seemed impossible at first, but by revisiting this goal regularly and adapting my approach, we eventually made it a reality.
Action steps:
- Create a list of ambitious gaming-related projects or career goals
- Regularly review and update this list, considering industry changes and your personal growth
- Don't be discouraged by initial rejections - use them as learning opportunities
All the best success stories in the gaming industry are a combination of self-belief, humility, resilience, and agility. My journey from advertising to launching major esports scenes is a testament to these qualities. The right people in my life made sure I learned all three of these lessons, and their guidance was invaluable.
